There are some strange design choices that make it a bit frustrating even in the early game, including:
- RNG-based progression where you could a long time mining and not discovering new species, or getting close to uncovering them only to run out of energy
- Dramatic "presentation" for the species that have already been discovered, slowing down the flow of gameplay
- No way to quickly replay after the level end screen; you HAVE to go to the dex / home
- No indication of how many fossils are in the current mine (total and remaining); especially egregious since this is clearly inspired by Pokemon / Pokeclicker
what's the difference between the hammer and the pickaxe?
from what i can tell the hammer does a 3x3 square instead of a + pattern and costs 3x as much, but no extra damage.
The pick is actually slightly more efficient per hit but the hammer helps clear bigger spaces faster once you discover where a fossil is hidden. Mostly just personal preference.
yeah so the pick is just straight up better? the hammer is faster, but overall worse, and there isn't a reason to go fast, so its just worse, is there a reason to use it?
The pick is only VERY marginally more efficient than the hammer so it's not that big a deal. The game is not incredibly high stakes so the option of the hammer is merely for preference. Some people like the heft of smashing a bigger area. Some like precision. I didn't make this game to be hyper-optimised, it's more for the vibes. If I continued to work on it past the jam I would've made sure every tool was perfectly balanced in its own niche.
So the game is excellent. I like how the game automatically tricks the brain into playing more and more... And that is awesome. Hands down a top game
Haha glad you enjoyed! And I'm happy I could make it compelling enough without a reliance on combat systems
